(RTTNews.com) - Auto giants General Motors, Ford and Toyota posted strong sales in the U.S. for September, as the auto industry looks to rebound.
General Motors, the largest U.S. automaker, said its sales for September increased 12 percent to 279,397 units from last year. Retail deliveries, which accounted for 80 percent of sales, rose 8 percent.
Crossover deliveries were up 43 percent, trucks were up 10 percent and passenger cars were down 11 percent.
"The overall strength of the U.S. economy is the main force driving the market," said GM Chief Economist Mustafa Mohatarem. "With the U.S. economy strengthening, retail sales should remain strong for the foreseeable future."
Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford's September sales rose 8.7 percent to 222,248 from 204,447 last year. Retail sales rose 4.4 percent with last year at 169,544 vehicles, while fleet sales increased 25.1 percent to 52.704.
Ford's car sales for the month declined 1.3 percent while truck sales rose 19.9 percent and SUV sales gained 1.8 percent.
FCA US LLC, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, reported that its U.S. sales for September declined 10 percent to 174,266 units from 192,883 units last year, reflecting year-over-year sales drop in the Jeep, Chrysler, Fiat and Dodge brands.
Retail sales rose 0.3 percent and fleet sales declined 41 percent, in line with Fiat's strategy to reduce sales to the daily rental segment.
Toyota September sales grew 14.9 percent to 226,632 vehicles from 197,264 last year.
Sales at the namesake Toyota division gained 16.9 percent driven largely by 43.2 percent increase in Toyota's crossover and truck division. Lexus division sales inched up 1.5 to 26,196 units.
