A new milestone for the new year — the Nasdaq Composite closed above the 7,000 mark for the first time as Wall Street revved up after the holiday.
The Nasdaq gained 1.49 per cent to close the day at 7,006.89, a new record for the tech-heavy index. The S&P 500 also advanced 0.83 per cent to close at a new record of 2,695.79, with energy stocks fuelling the benchmark index’s gains amid higher oil prices. Walt Disney’s 3.5 per cent gain stole the spotlight on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, helping the index to an 0.42 per cent gain at 24,824.01.
Even while equities were injected with a dose of optimism, the dollar softened. The dollar index closed down 0.3 per cent at 91.852, its lowest point since September. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note ended the day at 2.46 per cent, and gold glittered, with a 0.8 per cent gain to $1,319.8 a troy ounce.
