Algeria's Sonatrach agrees to build petrochemical facility in Turkey -Erdogan

Reuters

ISTANBUL, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Algeria's oil and gas company Sonatrach has agreed with Turkish firms Ronesans and Bayegan to build a petrochemical facility worth $1 billion in Turkey, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

The facility will produce 450,000 tonnes of propylene a year, using raw material supplied by Algeria, Erdogan said.

He said the plant will also reduce Turkey's dependence on foreign petrochemicals by 25 percent.

Erdogan said he wanted to triple the value of trade between Turkey and Algeria to over $10 billion a year.

The agreement comes as part of Turkey's growing investments and trade partnerships with African countries. Last year, Turkey opened a $50 million military training base in Somalia and agreed to rebuild a ruined Ottoman port city in Sudan, as well as to build an airport in Khartoum and invest in Sudan's private sector.
