Stock Futures Rise; Mattel Drags On Nasdaq; These 2 Biotechs Soar

Stock futures rose Monday as many drug makers showed premarket strength and bitcoin futures rising in their debut, while tech stocks generally posted mild gains.

XFutures for the Dow Jones industrial average added 0.2%, with Merck (MRK) climbing 0.6% and Caterpillar (CAT) rising 0.4% at the top of the index. Nasdaq 100 futures inched a fraction above fair value, held back by Mattel's (MAT) nearly 2% decline.

S&P 500 futures ticked 0.1% higher. Russell 2000 futures rose 0.2%.

The market heads into an unusually busy mid-December week that revolves around a Federal Reserve a rate policy decision on Wednesday, and includes Sunday evening's launch of bitcoin futures trade, an S&P 500 share balance on Thursday and the ongoing congressional effort to reconcile the House and Senate lobes of a tax reform package.

Alphabet Tops FANGs As Fox, Biotechs, Bitcoin Soar

Apple (AAPL) edged ahead less than 0.1% and Alphabet (GOOGL) ran ahead of the FANG stock tech leaders with a 0.4% gain. Alphabet remains in a buy range, less than 5% above a flat base buy point at 1008.10.

21st Century Fox (FOX) rolled out a 5% premarket gain. The stock ended Friday ended Friday 36% off a November low, and just beyond buy range above a 31.02 buy point in a cup-with-handle base.

Biotech stocks were highly active in early trade, with Blueprint Medicines (BPMC) up 19% and Bluebird Bio (BLUE) soaring 25% and Biomarin Pharmaceuticals (BMRN) 5% higher. All rose after releasing positive trial results data.

Bitcoin traded above $16,000, with bitcoin futures, which launched on CBOE Global Markets (CBOE) Sunday evening, soaring more than 25% and twice tripping circuit-breaker trading halts.Futures are set to begin trade on CME Group (CME) exchanges next week. Among bitcoin-related stocks, Riot Blockchain (RIOT) jumped 7% and Marathon Patent Group (MARA) vaulted 10%.

Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC) was effectively flat, but Overstock (OSTK) — an online retailer that accepts bitcoin transactions — swept up 9% in premarket trade.
